Guernica s'est inspiré du bombardement de la petite ville basque de GUERNICA, le 26 avril 1937, par l'aviation allemande au service de Franco.

Picasso, à travers ce tableau, symbolise l'horreur des conflits humains. Il représente cette horreur grâce à l'emploi de formes très crues montrant la cruauté humaine. Le bombardement de GUERNICA fit 2000 victimes essentiellement des femmes et des enfants.

"La peinture n'est pas faite pour décorer les appartements; c’est une arme offensive et défensive contre l’ennemi", c'est ce que déclara Picasso à propos de Guernica. Ce tableau fut composé en quelques jours juste après le bombardement du village espagnol de Guernica par la Légion Condor.

Guernica was inspired by the bombardment of the small Basque town of GUERNICA, on April 26, 1937, by German aircraft in the service of Franco.

Picasso, through this painting, symbolizes the horror of human conflict. He represents this horror through the use of very raw forms showing human cruelty. The bombardment of GUERNICA claimed 2,000 victims, mainly women and children.

“Painting is not made to decorate apartments; it is an offensive and defensive weapon against the enemy,” Picasso said of Guernica. This painting was composed in a few days just after the bombing of the Spanish village of Guernica by the Condor Legion.
